I am hoping, since i left the meeting early that some uniform decision was made as to the next step. Maybe we could have the same publicity slogans or posters etc. I know that STW has this stuff already, but to make it specific to the palestine issue? If people started seeing flyers and posters across their towns and universities, and then rallies, that all looked the same the effect would be magic and i don't think this has to be under one organisation - we can just have the same material without affiliating it with any organisation. In fact, that may have a greater effect - everyone falling under the banner of palestinian freedom! no matter what their ssocial, religious and political affiliations. that is what was so inspiring in the movement when i first saw it, and that is what will attract more people to it. I also want to see a week with a huge amount of rallies and protests from activists in towns and in universities between now and the G20. The 25th of Actualyl i would preffer the same day but i don't think that is a possibility. Or is it....? :-)
So please guys let me know what you think. Lets take this a step higher guys.

i think we could use psc stuff for palestine-specific material. anything new would have to incorporate something specific about the student dimension of it. with regard to slogans, my imagination is escaping me at the moment, but there are some ones around that are always useful

awesome but talking about slogans and deciding them is fine - what about activity?! some of the most powerful movements have had synchronised activity at different parts of a state, under one banner, and that is what has attracted the eye of the public also guys, i meant what i said yesterday about integrating local communities, and national representatives of those comunities any ideas in that respect??

well there are obviously local stw branches if we were to organise under anti-war banners, so for instance soas has links to camden stw. but those guys generally come to rallies etc. it seems to me that, and this is just my opinion, the main purpose of the network we are trying to establish, this forum etc, is precisely that. networking. which is why i really, really wish more people would use this effing website. i'll try to get the link out to more people. anyway, in the interest of sharing media and stuff, i think an online drive would be a good way to pool resources. it's 4am so i won't do it now, but if anyone takes the initiative before me, post a link and we can upload anything useful. that way we'll discover the best material and for what purpose. as for activity, which it's true is most important, i do think it's best for now at least to keep it to stuff already organised. so feb 25th for eg, we could have local actions on campuses, in cities. a lot of people won't be able to make it to london, so students involved in this coordination could try to do that with any local groups. maybe a bad eg since the 25th is less than 2 weeks away, but you get the idea. on a more basic level, maybe there is material to be created- a clear document/ slogan/ design/ whatever that connected the ghazza occupations and the institutional issues that are apparent in them, like why such extreme actions are even necessary to gain support for palestine, or why condemnatory statements are rarely if ever issued by directors, could be really useful to mobilise support for free and liberated education

FEEDBACK AND IDEAS FROM INFORMAL NATIONAL MEET-UP 13/02/2009: PLEASE FORWARD ONTO INTERNAL LISTS PROPOSED NATIONAL COORDINATION A call for national coordination of the occupations, including a meeting in April in London, was put forward by a group of about 40 people after the StW meeting a couple of weeks ago. This would be an opportunity to further coordinate the national student occupations for Gaza but also to broaden out the movement to include other struggles and post-occupation activities. It was felt that the coordination should remain grassroots in its organisation, aiming to be fully inclusive to all participants, and student/participant-led. It should seek to unite all individuals and organisations wanting to build a campaigning movement. Ideas for such a national coordination that have been circulated so far are included below. The proposal for a co-ordination meeting is currently being discussed on the e-mail lists below, and everyone is encouraged to get involved. 18th April was initially agreed upon, but this date would prevent Oxford and Cambridge from participating as it falls within their Easter holidays. The date currently proposed is April 25th, but this and location are still up for discussion if the current proposition poses problems for anyone. Please bring this proposal to your meetings, and respond with confirmation, thoughts or suggestions to studentcoordination@gmail.com asap so we can book a building. Please also send suggestions for structure and agenda items as the meeting is by us and for us. IMPROVED COMMUNICATIONS We wanted to encourage occupations to consider internally how they will organise to communicate with other occupation groups and to ensure that they are doing so effectively. We encourage occupations to form working groups or open roles or elect individuals to be contact points for the national network so we can all pass info both ways. Everyone is encouraged to get involved at the national level, but some person or people to bottom-line inter-occupation communication would be helpful. Current means of communication are the national occupations email list - please ensure that someone is checking this and passing on messages [please e-mail this address if you want to get on it:]; the 'studentcoordination' gmail list which is open to all but currently under private admin [please e-mail this address if you want to get on it:]; the national forum (www.occupations.proboards.com) which is open to all, including members of the public; and the shared gmail account with google documents (ukoccupations@gmail.com//password: freegazanow). At a bare minimum, it would be good to have one person from each occupation on both e-mail lists as this will be the primary way to share important information and resources. There was the suggestion that we establish a weekly or bi-weekly national bulletin to be circulated to all occupation groups with news of what we are doing, when/how, etc. in order to share and co-ordinate ideas, current projects and plans. Currently to be co-ordinated via Honor (honor.brabazon@univ.ox.ac.uk). REGIONAL NETWORKING We want to propose that occupations/active individuals form links with other universities in their part of the country so that we can co-ordinate discussion and networking on a regional level where occupations can most easily support each other and so that we can then bring ideas and plans together more efficiently on a national level. We felt the organisation of regional gatherings with other occupations or active individuals in your area might be particularly useful. Suggested regions: Sussex: sussexoccupation.blogspot.com/Byam Shaw: byamshawpeoplesuniversity.blogspot.com/UEL: ueloccupation.blogspot.com/Goldsmiths: goldsmithsoccupation.blogspot.com/LSE: lseoccupation.blogspot.comSOAS: soassolidarity4gaza.blogspot.com/KCL: kcloccupation.blogspot.comQMUL: www.queenmaryoccupation.blogspot.com/ Essex: www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=45143838671UEA: ueaoccupation.blogspot.com/Cambridge: cambridgegazasolidarity.blogspot.comUWE: uweoccupation.blogspot.com/Oxford: occupiedoxford.wordpress.com/ Warwick: warwicksolidaritysitin.wordpress.com/Birmingham: birminghamoccupation.wordpress.com/Nottingham: occupationnottingham.wordpress.com/Sheffield Hallam: shuoccupation.blogspot.com/www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=59823934592#/group.php?gid=59823934592Manchester: manunioccupation.wordpress.comManchester Met: mmuoccupation.blogspot.com/Bradford: publish.indymedia.org.uk/en/2009/01/420448.htmlLeeds: leedsunioccupation.blogspot.com/ Edinburgh: edinburghunioccupation.wordpress.com/Glasgow: glasgowunioccupation.blogspot.com/Strathcylde: strathclydeunioccupation.wordpress.com/St Andrews: standrewsunioccupation.wordpress.com SUPPORT TO OTHER UNIS There was a proposal to compile a list of the contacts the occupation groups know who have particular resources or skills (e.g. legal expertise or web design) to be publically available to all (this can be stored in shared 'ukoccupations gmail account'). For occupations/individuals needing support, for example through coordinated complaint/shame letters to their university, there was a suggestion that draft templates of letters can be made public and circulated via these email lists. For universities looking to occupy: we discussed how individuals are willing to come as delegates to your university to talk about their occupation and share experiences and tips. Please send call-outs to 'studentcoordination@gmail.com' or to the national occupations list. We also have statements of support from various institutions and organisations that we can share with your university and other resources (e.g. internet addresses for films that you can screen during your occupation, etc.). In addition KCL have drawn up document with tips from several occupations. This is currently available in the documents section of the shared gmail account ('ukoccupations'//PW:'freegazanow'). OTHER IDEAS/SUGGESTIONS KCL have proposed the creation of an online journal/ezine, where anyone can contribute articles regarding anything - academic, research, updates, articles, blogs etc. Currently to be co-ordinated via (buerhansen@gmail.com) Synchronised national actions: i.e. several or all occupations organising local actions around a particular issue to co-incide with one another. Can be co-ordinated via weekly bulletin/national list. Call-out for writings about occupations for Cambridge publication 'Impropaganda' - any topics, less than 1000wrds. Email submissions to: impropaganda@live.com ***NOTE: This is a completely open and informal coordination. Please get involved and share feedback and ideas. Everyone is welcome.***
